An Overview of Network Chiropractic

Where to begin. Okay, let's begin with the basic tenets of the profession from which Network has emerged and go on a journey from there. All the way back in 1895, a man by the name of Daniel David Palmer was working as a 'magnetic healer' in his building in Davenport, Iowa. He used his personal hands on methods and such to help people heal from a wide variety of health complaints and conditions. One day, a janitor - Harvey Lillard - in the building where he maintained an office had mentioned that he had lost his hearing due to an injury he had experienced when working in their building. He found that as he went to stand up beneath a stairwell one afternoon, that he had hit his head and upper back and since had had difficulty hearing.

What Did D.D. Palmer Do?

Well, as an intuitive healer at the time and a pioneer in those days, D.D. reasoned that if something had been racked from its normal position within Mr. Lillard's body, then restoring its position would lead to a potential reversal of his deafness. So, with what I'm sure was a series of discussions, calm reasoning and educated assumptions, the two agreed. Harvey would allow D.D. Palmer to attempt to restore his vertebrae to its more normal position. After careful assessment and study of Mr. Lillards body and spine, D.D. had found the area where he wished to work his magic. He did this with his hands and thrusting motion (myth says it was using a large book) and 'racked Harvey Lillard's spinal vertebrae' back into normal positioning. Upon standing, Harvey indicated that he could now hear the wagon wheels and horse hooves on the cobblestone street down below from their second story office window. Low and behold, chiropractic is born!

From those pioneering days of chiropractic in the late 19th century and into today, much has changed. Chiropractic is known for the treatment of back pain, headaches, neck pain and injuries from auto accidents. This was not always the case. In fact, a big part of what traditional chiropractic on the map was the outbreak of the influenza epidemic in the 1930s. At that time, people were dying from the infection and medicine was offering dismal hope for individuals coming down with the disease. What was noticed was that the people that were receiving chiropractic care (for other reasons) were not prone to such a high infection rate. The numbers escape me at the moment, but they were significant. So, people began seeing their local chiropractor for the treatment and/or prevention of influenza. What was found was that the mortality figures for those receiving chiropractic care was much less. From these more 'holistic' roots, chiropractic became more and more increasingly popular and known for its results with back related pains. After all, chiropractors do address the back (spine anyway).

Where Does Network Chiropractic Spinal Analysis Fit In?

Fast forward through the lawsuits and cases with the American Medical Association and their loss in court to charges of conspiracy to prevent patients from receiving appropriate chiropractic care, through insurance acceptance until the more recent present. During this time, many developments in chiropractic methods and more importantly chiropractic discoveries and philosophies have evolved. There are a wide variety of ways to adjust or manipulate the spine. Some rely on instrumentation, while others utilize simply the doctor's trained hands. None the less, the wide variety leads to some misunderstanding about how it works.

Then, along in the 1980s comes an even more revolutionary chiropractic philosophy and model of neural function. A man by the name of Donal Epstein, chiropractor practicing in New York state discovers and really founds the principles of how spinal tension, misalignment and our consciousness all relate. Sounds like quite a 'unified theory' doesn't it? Well, this claim is anything but exaggerated.

What happens is as Dr. Epstein is working with people, he notices that utilizing a particular set of chiropractic techniques in a certain order, allows him to see repeatable and definable results in his patients. It is almost as if, the less he does with specific areas of the spine, the more effective the results he gets. So, as all bearers of extraordinary gifts do, he goes on to develop a specific technique that blends his principles into what he calls Network Chiropractic - a term that defines simply a network of various chiropractic techniques. Furthermore, as this work becomes more refined, studied and practiced, the term Network Spinal Analysis or Network Care begin to be used more descriptively to talk about this style. In any event, they come from the same place fundamentally.

What Is Network Chiropractic's Revolutionary Discovery...?

Well, it isn't so much a discovery as it is a deeper fundamental question of how our body heals and organizes information, consciousness and intelligence. In traditional chiropractic, there is a general idea put forth that it is the misalignment of spinal vertebrae that lead to some sort of dysfunction in your body and is related to various symptoms and/or disease. Where the Network model differs is that it asks the question: "In what way is your misaligned (subluxated) spine helping to protect or keep you safe from the information or energy that your body was unable to effectively adapt to at that given time?"

That's a pretty profound question, don't you think? It certainly seems to be more directed at our body's underlying mechanism for adapting to the stressors of life and utilizing its innate intelligence to respond as effectively as it can, given its current abilities. So, rather than seeing the subluxated or misaligned spine as a problem that needs fixing, per se, now we can see that it is a body that has/had a compromised ability to adapt. The way it protected you from further damage or injury was to 'shut off' certain areas from more nerve information via the subluxation mechanism. Wow, our bodies do that for a reason!?!

Then, through a technique that is too cumbersome to explain with words but readily available to experience via your local practitioner's office, the gentle touches classic of this profound work begin the process of your body unwinding these distortions and tension patterns. Whether you suffer with headaches, chronic pain, mental/emtional stress or are just interested in maximizing your body's potential, Network Chiropractic is an avenue worthy of your pursuits.

Over three years ago I completed a nearly year long series of NSA and SRI to deal with Crohn's. I had read a small article that mentioned that Chiropractics would help with autoimune and quite by accident I found an NSA practictioner in Winter Park Florids. First I grew back an inch in height. I had to readjust all the mirrors in the car. There was a thunderstorm during the drive home and what would have caused me great tension didn't. I had three treatments a week and one SRI session and was faitful in the SRI at home.

The treatments and meds for Crohn's Disease were making me ill and I knew I needed another way. I was following a speacial diet which was helping the inflamation and within a few months I was off all meds.

I had to stop the sessions becuase of a relocation. Last year I had a colonoscopy and it inflamation and scar tissue so the doctor put me on Asacol. It made me ill but I stayed on it cutting back the dosage and after a few months became ill again. I stopped taking it going back on the strict low carb/zero soy/lactose free/gluten free diet and taking up SRI again. I've had no episodes for serval years now.

Jmansson - thank you so much for sharing your personal story! What an amazing journey you've had. I can't say that my experiences were as dramatic. What I've really enjoyed feeling is more energy, breath and just a general sense of ease in my body since beginning my NSA care. My experiences continue to unfold as I grow as well.

I think that because it is so gentle and non-invasive by nature and design, that some people don't know what to think at first. After all, as you indicated, we're so used to medicine or attempts to quickly treat something that we forget just how magical our bodies are. Thanks again for stopping by and sharing YOUR magical story of healing with NSA/SRI! Many blessings to you...

Thank you for a very useful, introductory hub. I will be starting Spinal Network Analysis treatment this week. I knew a little about it but informative this hub with the videos really helped to explain it a bit more. I am now really looking forward to seeing if it works for me.
